Position Summary

The South Metropolitan Higher Education Consortium (SMHEC) invites nominations and applications for the position of Executive Director. With eleven member institutions representing the spectrum of higher education in Illinois, SMHEC seeks an innovative leader to extend and deepen its collaborations and partnerships. In concert with a committed Council of Presidents, the Executive Director will establish a strategic vision for the consortium.

For twenty five years, the South Metropolitan Higher Education Consortium has promoted new and enhanced educational services and programs to citizens, businesses and other institutions in the Chicago Southland through the identification of existing unmet and emerging needs; the identification, coordination and development of resources and programs to meet these needs; and the dissemination of information regarding educational and regional development opportunities to constituents of the region.

Based at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights, Illinois, the Executive Director will report to the Council of Presidents. The Executive Director is expected to travel regularly between the member institutions. Preferably, the Executive Director will assume the role in November 2017.

Reporting and Supervisory Relationships

Direct reporting relationship to the Council of Presidents.

Essential Responsibilities

1. Serve as the public face and articulate advocate for the Consortium.
2. Establish a strategic plan that affirms the direction of SMHEC.
3. Bring organizational coherence to SMHEC.
4. Develop and maintain strong working relationships with the Council of Presidents.
5. Establish strong ties with members of all SMHEC committees and task forces. Manage communications with these leaders to assess the needs and interests of the individuals and institutions.
6. Cultivate and coordinate resources (across members) to launch and manage collaborations that generate value and service to member institutions.
7. Develop, maintain and enhance external linkages to explore new opportunities for growth.
8. Steward the resources of SMHEC to accomplish its goals, effectively and efficiently.
9. Communicate, internally and externally, the value of higher education collaboration and specifically the value of SMHEC.
10. Effectively manage expectations and services within a complex environment, exercising sound business sense, diplomacy and tact.
11. Assist with setting the agenda for SMHEC meetings with the Chair of the Council of Presidents.
12. Explore and assist with new and existing contracts that enhance the value of SMHEC.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor Degree.
2. Successful senior-level administrative experience
3. Ability to prioritize and manage concurrent projects and competing priorities.
4. Demonstrated ability to lead diverse groups who administratively report to members or other organizations.
5. Experience with effectively managing relationships.
6. Financial management experience, including budget development.
7. Strong public speaking, written communications and presentation skills.
8. Experience leading, inspiring and supporting change across diverse institutions and constituencies.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Advanced Degree.
2. Demonstrates a commitment and passion for collaboration among higher education institutions.
3. Anticipates and analyzes challenges, defines problems and objectives, recognizes options and opportunities and formulates solutions with a clear understanding of inherent risks and implications.
4. Commits to innovation and a willingness to take risks, seeks out new ideas, approaches and perspectives.
5. Strengthens cooperation and expands resources through leadership.
6. Interacts diplomatically with campus leaders on sensitive and controversial issues.
7. Optimizes existing resources to advance SMHEC’s mission.
8. Manages people and projects, initiates and completes programs utilizing human and other resources that report to member institutions, not SMHEC.
9. Understands issues and trends in higher education.
